Second-hand online: towards a C2B2C model?

Since 2020, e-commerce has grown steadily, despite a 10% growth in e-commerce, we see changes in consumer buying behavior in the second quarter of 2022.

They are concerned about their purchases in view of the current geopolitical and economic context, and tend towards more responsible purchases, e-commerce comes in support of this consumption and is more aware of current issues.

Selling second hand: the rise of online second hand sales

With the climate emergency and inflation, the consumers are reviewing their purchasing behavior and seem to be more and more seduced by the purchase of second-hand products online. The second hand market is taking more and more space, it is estimated at 86 billion euros in Europe...

Of course, the sale of second-hand products is not new, in the past, consumers could buy second-hand clothes or second-hand goods in sales depots. However, with the rise of e-commerce and the development of digital technology, this trend is growing and becoming more and more common

We observe that consumers are becoming e-traders themselves on their own scale, since they resell products on marketplaces specializing in second hand: "80% of cyber shoppers have already bought reconditioned or second hand products or have resold items themselves online" according to the Fevad.

A form of circular trade is being set up, and individuals and e-commerce players are not hesitating to participate actively.

Towards a democratization of C2C?

As mentioned earlier, many online shoppers have already sold or purchased second-hand products online.

Consumers are not shy about putting some of their wardrobe up for sale and becoming e-tailers, and, like businesses, may need a helping hand to get their merchandise shipments under control.

Reliable transactions can be complicated to set up, and it is possible to see this in the luxury sector. According to IFOP, "57% of luxury goods buyers occasionally buy second-hand products".

However, there is a certain distrust of second-hand purchases in general, but this is more pronounced in the luxury sector due to the lack of traceability on products. 23% of cyber shoppers do not buy second hand products on the internet, because there is no guarantee on the products. According to a Fevad study "4 out of 5 users consider security as a priority for their online purchases".

Faced with this mistrust, some players are emerging on the C2B2C model.

C2B2C: the major e-commerce brands are diversifying

second hand online

Consumer to business to consumer is a model in which a professional or a company acts as an intermediary in an exchange of goods between two individuals. It is a question of acting as a bridge between two individuals, either for the control of the quality of the goods, the traceability, and to secure the commercial transactions, as BackMarket does so well with the sale of computer products or Vestiaire collective on clothing and luxury leather goods.

For less expensive products, many other platforms are emerging and contributing to boost this market.

The big players in the clothing industry have well detected this phenomenon of circular trade and have seized the opportunity with their second hand vertical like :

  • Kiabi secondhand clothes,
  • Zalando second hand,
  • Decathlon Second Life
  • Asos Marketplace

Still, cyber shoppers are torn between a more responsible consumption and the price of the products they consume. For 78% of them, the price comes first, while only 39% of them are willing to pay more for a more responsible product.
